I live in Japan as a teacher in Fukuoka city and went with a work friend to their hometown in the Arita countryside once. His family also ran an old school inn. And @Fofotron hit the nail pretty much on the head here.
They all live in joint families with 2-3 generations of families living in the same neighborhood all with similar family businesses.
People here mostly all have arranged marriages, so the story of a girl eloping spread like wildfire here when I was visiting with my friend. I used to see people avoiding and ostracizing that girl's entire family, including her parents. Like, people seriously avoided buying anything from the pottery/ceramic shop of that family.
It was bizarre seeing this as a city boy...
